Overview
The Teaching Council is made up of 37 members acting in a voluntary capacity as non-executive directors of the Council. Of the 22 places on the Council reserved for registered teachers, 16 are elected and six are nominated by the teacher unions.
The term of office of the current Council ends on 27 March 2012 and, in advance of that date, national elections will be held in February and March 2012 to elect the 16 teachers to the new Council. The elections will be held in accordance with the Teaching Council (Election of Members) Regulations 2008 and 2011.
On 25 November 2011 a Provisional Electoral Roll (PER) was published. The PER listed all those teachers registered on 30 September 2011, who will be eligible to vote and /or be nominated to stand for election. It detailed the name, gender, teacher registration number, electoral category (including geographical constituency) and, where applicable, the school roll number of eligible teachers. Teachers were invited to view the PER on the Council website and apply for amendment to same if required. The closing date for receipt of amendments was 9 December 2011.
Following consideration of requests for amendments to the PER by the Returning Officer, the final Electoral Roll was published on 22 December 2011 and, in accordance with the Election Regulations, is available for inspection in the Teaching Council Offices during office hours.
Throughout the process the Teaching Council has sought to keep teachers informed of the process.
