The Teaching Council’s logo and what it means

The Teaching Council Logo

In developing an identity, the Teaching Council wanted something unique and instantly recognisable. We consulted with our membership throughout the development process, and commissioned a logo that answers our brief admirably. Our logo represents the core values of the teaching profession, promoting excellence and quality. It reflects the partnership between teachers, students, parents and others. It illustrates growth and development. It demonstrates the representational membership of the council and conveys the gravitas appropriate to the Council's role as a statutory body. It's distinctively Irish, modern, progressive and future-looking. It's also clear and instantly recognisable.

The Council’s logo is a triptych.  Its panels allow a number of interpretations. The graphic designer has suggested the following interpretation of each.

  • In the first panel, the tick mark represents the high standards which the Council sets and expects in all aspects of professional practice and conduct.
  • The centre panel represents knowledge. The salmon is a reference to a tale from Irish mythology of the Bradán Feasa, the Salmon of Knowledge. The legend stated that the first person to taste this fish would be the wisest person in Ireland. This story is an integral part of Irish heritage.
  • The series of dots in the third panel represents collegiality, collaboration and cooperation between students, parents, teachers, Council members and others.
  • The colour blue symbolises education, quality and integrity. Green signifies growth and stability. Red signifies optimism and positivity.
  • The clarity and modernism of the typeface complements the logo.
