The nomination process followed by candidates is outlined below.
Nomination of Candidates
Any teacher registered on 30 September 2011 who is included on the Electoral Roll can put themselves forward for nomination as a candidate. He/she can only be nominated in the electoral category and geographical constituency assigned to them on the Electoral Roll and must be nominated by 15 eligible electors from the same constituency and category. If you are interested in being nominated to run for election to the Teaching Council you should:
- Check your details on the Electoral Roll which is now available for inspection at the offices of the Teaching Council.
- Download Nomination Papers for your sector (i.e. declaration of consent form and nomination form) - click here to download.
- Complete and sign the Declaration of Consent Form indicating your willingness to be nominated for election to the Teaching Council.
- Ensure that your Nomination Paper is completed correctly and signed by 15 eligible* electors.
*Each elector must be registered in the same Constituency and Voting Category as the Nominee and it is the responsibility of the Nominee to ensure that all electors are valid. - Nomination papers must be accompanied by a passport sized photograph and a manifesto* / statement not exceeding 50 words, if the nominee wishes to have same included in an election mailshot to be sent to all schools and published on the Council website. Photographs and manifesto statements cannot be accepted after receipt of nomination papers. *A manifesto will take the form of a written statement, not exceeding 50 words, in which confirmed candidates can set out their vision for the Council and outline the reasons why they feel they should be elected. The statement can be submitted in Irish or English or a combination of both languages, provided that the overall limit of 50 words is not exceeded. It will be published on the Council website and in a mail shot to all schools and is designed to assist electors in deciding how they will cast their vote(s).The Returning Officer reserves the right to edit or not publish a manifesto where he considers the content to be derogatory or defamatory.
- Completed Nomination Papers (including consent form, nomination form and, where applicable, passport photo of nominee and manifesto) must be submitted to the Returning Officer either in person or by post to arrive by 4 p.m. on 31January 2012.
- Election Agents
A nominee for Election may appoint one or more agents and the name of the person or persons so appointed must be notified to the Returning Officer in writing not later than 4 p.m. on 31 January 2012. - Change of name facility on ballot paper
A nominee may apply in writing to the Returning Officer before the expiration time for receiving nominations to have his or her name entered on the ballot paper in such form as the nominee is commonly known. [Regulation 8(7)].
To Nominate a Candidate
Any teacher registered on 30 September 2011 who is included on the Electoral Roll is eligible to nominate a candidate to run for election to the Teaching Council. You can only nominate candidates who are registered in the same Electoral Constituency and Category as yourself. There is no limit on the number of candidates that you can nominate for election. If you wish to nominate a candidate for the Teaching Council elections you should:
- Check your details on the Electoral Roll which is now available for inspection at the offices of the Teaching Council.
- You can nominate a candidate by signing your name on their Nomination Form. Please note, you can only nominate candidates who are registered in the same Geographical Constituency and Voting category as yourself. Click here to download.
