Commencement of Part 5 of the Teaching Council Act

The Minister for Education and Skills, Mr. Richard Bruton T.D., has today commenced Part 5 of the Teaching Council Acts 2001-2015. This part of the Act relates to the Council’s role in investigating complaints relating to registered teachers.

The commencement of this part of the Act marks an important milestone on the journey of enhanced teaching and learning that the profession is leading through the Teaching Council.

It is important to note that existing, agreed procedures for dealing with difficulties and complaints at school level, will continue to operate. The Council believes that, in most cases, these will offer the best means for resolving problems as they arise. Only complaints which are of a serious nature, relating to registered teachers, can progress to an inquiry.

An information leaflet on the Fitness to Teach process will issue to every registered teacher by post in the coming days. This leaflet also provides information the Updated 2nd Edition of the of Professional Code of Conduct for Teachers.

Further information about the Fitness to Teach process including detailed information booklets is available on the Professional Standards section  of the Teaching Council’s website. Copies of the information booklets can be obtained by emailing professionalstandards@teachingcouncil.ie
