Introducing Registration Regulations 2016

On the 25 July 2016, the Minister for Education and Skills, Mr Richard Burton, T.D., signed the Teaching Council Registration Regulations 2016. The Registration Regulations 2016 replace the Registration Regulations 2009. Teachers who are registered under the 2009 Regulations will not be affected by the introduction of the Registration Regulations 2016.

The new regulations focus on registration in the broadest sense, and address a range of issues. They make provision for the new vetting requirements, evidence of character (fit and proper person) and renewals.  In addition they take account of the enhanced initial teacher education programmes that are available across the Irish Higher Education Institutions.

Under the Registration Regulations 2016, registration will now occur under “Routes of Registration”, instead of Regulations Two to Five, which were in place since 2009. This re-designation reflects the Council’s responsibility to provide for a fully qualified Register of Teachers.  It is important to note that these changes do not impact the registration of any teacher currently on the Register. Those teachers will continue to remain on the Register once their registration is renewed annually.

The Registration Regulations 2016 are available on the Publications section of the Teaching Council website.
