Guidelines for the Assessment of Court Convictions and Prosecutions Pending before the Courts – New Entrants

Section 31(5)(c) of the Teaching Council Act, 2001 sets out the conditions for admission of new-entrant teachers to the Register of Teachers. In relation to sub-section (iv), which deals with ‘evidence of character’, the Teaching Council has put in place the procedures for assessing the relevance of court convictions and prosecutions pending before the courts when considering registration applications.

The following document describes the procedures, processes and standards approved by the Teaching Council, which guide the Registration Committee and Evidence of Character Panel when considering an application from a person wishing to register as a teacher and who has a conviction or prosecution pending.
