Additional Documentation Requirements
An applicant who has resided outside of Ireland, including Northern Ireland, for three years or more, after the age of 18, is required to provide the following supporting documentation when submitting their Garda Vetting Application Form:
1.        A recent (less than one year old) original police clearance from the jurisdiction(s) of previous residence*.
2.        An original character reference from their most recent employer (on company headed paper).
3.        A recent (less than one year old) certificate of good standing from the authorised body or Competent Authority of the country in which you are currently registered. A recent Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) letter will suffice. This is only required if you completed your teacher education qualification outside of Ireland.

Completing the Form
1. Your Details
• The form must be completed in full using BLOCK CAPITALS.
• The completed form must be legible.
• If a section of the form is not applicable to the applicant, this must be indicated by using N/A. This may be relevant, for example in the sections “Alias” and “Previous Name”.
• Alias is any other name that the applicant is known by other than their forename on their birth certificate. For example, someone named Kathleen may be known as Kay or Lena.

• Place/City of Origin is the area in which the applicant resided following his/her birth. It does not refer to the location of the hospital where the applicant was born.
• In the address section, every year must be accounted for. Current address can be indicated by using “Present” or “To Date” under the heading “Year To”.
• House names / numbers must be clearly legible. Where there is no house number, this should be indicated by inserting n/a.
• Newly qualified teachers should differentiate between home address and term address. The Garda Vetting Letter, which will be requested by employers, will be sent to the most recent address on the form. Indicating the correct address to be used can ensure that all correspondence from the Teaching Council reaches the applicant in a timely manner.

2. Correcting Errors
Errors must be corrected using pen, in a way which ensures the detail remains legible. It is advisable that applicants put their initials beside corrections to indicate their authenticity. Tipex or correctional fluid must not be used.

3. Signatures
The form must contain the applicant’s original signature. It cannot therefore be completed by a third party on behalf of the applicant.
The form must NOT be signed by a representative of the Gardaí at local level. The Teaching Council is the authorised body designated to submit Garda Vetting Applications and will liaise directly with the Garda Central Vetting Unit.

Submitting the Form
The original completed form must be returned to the Teaching Council. Copies cannot be accepted.
Only fully and correctly completed forms will be submitted to the Garda Central Vetting Unit for examination. Any form that is incorrectly completed will be returned to the applicant with omissions highlighted.

Results of the Vetting Process
Once the vetting process has been carried out by the GCVU, the results of the vet will be forwarded to the Teaching Council. On receipt of these results the applicant will receive a letter from the Teaching Council.

No individual will be registered by the Teaching Council until such time as vetting forms have been fully processed and a result has been issued to the applicant. Ensuring that the form is correctly filled out will expedite the registration process which will be undertaken in the coming months.
