Review of Registration Criteria for Mathematics (Post Primary)

The Teaching Council is currently reviewing the curricular subject criteria for registration on the basis of qualifications in Mathematics. It is expected that revised subject registration criteria will be introduced in early 2011 and will apply to applicants applying for registration from 01 July 2011.

Applicants seeking registration on the basis of Mathematics in their degree (e.g. Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Science Degree) should familiarise themselves with and ensure they comply with the Teaching Council subject registration criteria for Mathematics and/or Applied Mathematics with regard to coverage (30% of the degree, or 54 ECTS credits) and content (see NCCA website for Mathematics and Applied Mathematics Curricula).

Applicants should also note the requirements for registration as laid out in The Teaching Council [Registration] Regulations 2009 (Regulation 4 and 5) and the requirements for employment as laid out in DES Circular 0040/2010. Where shortfalls in the degree programme are identified, applicants should be aware that they will need to complete additional modules in Mathematics and/or Applied Mathematics in order to meet the subject registration criteria.

Do you intend to start teaching or change schools in the 2010/2011 School Year?

If you are planning to take up a teaching position in a Department of Education and Skills funded school on or after September 2010, you will need to be registered with The Teaching Council in order to comply with Departmental employment circulars.

The Council strongly recommends that applicants apply for registration a minimum of four months before taking up employment. Applicants should note that routine Garda Vetting, which forms part of the registration process, is currently taking 6-8 weeks.

Further information on how to apply for registration is available by clicking here.
