The induction workshop programme is designed to meet the particular professional development needs of newly qualified teachers (NQTs) as they make the transition from being a student teacher to being a qualified teacher with full classroom responsibility.
The programme comprises a series of 12 workshops provided by the National Induction Programme for Teachers (NIPT) in collaboration with education centres and is tailored to meet the professional development needs of NQTs during the three years following graduate registration. It builds on the learning which took place during initial teacher education.
The workshop programme is funded by the Department of Education and Skills and engagement in 10 of the 12 workshops is a requirement for all NQTs who complete their teacher education qualification in 2012 and subsequently. In addition, other teachers who apply for registration from 02 July 2012 under Regulation 2 (primary), Regulation 3 (Montessori and other categories) and Regulation 4 (post-primary including VECs) are required to complete the induction workshop programme provided that they have not previously:
- met the requirements of Post Qualification Employment (PQE) (post-primary)
- met the requirements of Probation (primary)
- completed an induction programme in another jurisdiction.

Workshops take place in the late afternoon or evening time and each workshop is two hours in duration. They take place in education centres and/or outreach venues around the country. Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) who graduated in recent years and have conditional registration from the Teaching Council (with the condition of probation or post-qualification employment being applied) are eligible to attend the workshops, should they so wish. Should demand exceed available places, priority may be afforded to NQTs whose registration is conditional on completion of the induction programme. NQTs should contact their local education centre regarding availability of places.
If you completed a recognised induction period abroad, you will not be required to complete the induction workshop programme in Ireland. Certified evidence of completing the induction period abroad will be required for registration.
All teachers registered with the Teaching Council since July 2012 subject to the Induction Workshop Programme condition will satisfy that condition when they complete 10 workshops within three years of their date of registration.
The Teaching Council, in consultation with the NIPT, and taking account of feedback received from NQTs, has changed the requirements with regard to the number of workshops NQTs must attend from 12 to 10 workshops.
All workshops must be completed within three years of registration with the Teaching Council. If during that period, you do not secure employment as a teacher, you may request from the Teaching Council an extension to the timeframe in which the Induction workshop Programme must be completed. (Extensions for satisfying other conditions of registration may also be considered.)
As a Newly Qualified Teacher (NQT), you are advised to register in the year in which you graduate. At that point, conditional registration is granted and all registration conditions, including the Induction Programme, must be satisfied within three years.
If you are intending to travel to another country and not teach, you may wish to defer applying for registration until you are considering a teaching position.
If you are intending to travel to another country to take up a teaching position, you may require evidence of current teacher registration and are advised to check with the relevant authorities in that jurisdiction.
An NQT should ideally join the programme from September but no later than October to benefit fully from the workshop programme. If you miss a workshop at the beginning of a school year, you will have an opportunity to attend that workshop at a later date, so long as you do so within the required three year timeframe.
The induction workshop programme is fully-funded by the Department of Education and Skills. Participating newly qualified teachers are responsible for their own travel expenses.
Yes. In order to apply for the induction workshop programme, you will be required to provide your registration number.
All matters relating to the induction workshop programme should be referred to your local education centre. See www.ateci.ie for a list of education centres.
If you have been granted registration with the condition “Induction programme”, you must attend a minimum of 10 workshops during the three years following registration in order to satisfy that condition. The condition will not be removed from your registration until such time as the Council has been notified by the education centre network that 10 workshops have been completed.
Each workshop, which will be of a two-hour duration, will be provided in all education centres over a two-week time period. If you miss a workshop you had hoped to attend, you may apply to attend that workshop on a different evening in the education centre, subject to availability, or in another education centre of your choice within that two-week timeframe. Alternatively, you may wish to postpone attendance until the following year, so long as you are still within the three-year timeframe within which the programme must be completed.
Yes. If you register and commence the programme in one education centre, but then your circumstances change, you may wish to complete the programme in another education centre(s). It is important that, if you are moving from an education centre, that you let the centre know that you are changing and that you apply for registration anew in another centre.
Once you have completed all workshops, the Education Centre Network will provide you with a Certificate of Attendance and notify the Council of same. The condition will then be removed and your registration status updated.
