The National Qualifications Authority of Ireland has recently announced that post-graduate programmes of initial teacher education which were formerly known as the Higher Diploma in Education and latterly, the Graduate/Post-Graduate Diploma in Education, are now to be renamed the Professional Diploma in Education. Furthermore, such programmes are to be formally designated Level 8 qualifications on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ).

Teachers who have completed these programmes or student teachers currently undergoing such programmes should note that the change of title and designation as a Level 8 qualification will have no bearing on the Council’s professional accreditation of such programmes for the purposes of registration with the Council.
