Further Education - Teacher Education Qualification

[ Thursday, 10th December 2009 ]

Some time ago the Teaching Council invited 3rd level course providers and other interested parties to a meeting to discuss the development of a teacher education qualification criteria/framework suitable for teachers in further education. Arising from that meeting a working group was set up.
The Teaching Council's Education Committee has accepted a report by the Working Group. This report is now available for consultation purposes specifically in relation to Section 5 (page 13) of the Report – Recommended Framework/Criteria for a Further Education Teacher Education Qualification.

Section 5 of the report is similar in format to Schedule One and Two of the Teaching Council [Registration] Regulations, 2009 which outline the principal requirements of the Council in relation to a satisfactory course in the theory and practice of Education for the purposes of Regulation Two (Primary) and Regulation Four (Post-Primary).

Observations from interested parties may be forwarded to Ms Ailish Murphy, ailish.murphy@teachingcouncil.ie by Friday, 22 January 2010.

The Council hopes to finalise its framework/criteria for a Further Education Teacher Education Qualification in early 2010 at which time it is expected that applications will be accepted for the purpose of accrediting Further Education Teacher Education Qualification programmes in accordance with Section 38 of the Teaching Council Act and Regulation Five of the Teaching Council [Registration] Regulations, 2009.
