If a teacher is conditionally registered with the Teaching Council, he or she will receive a certificate soon after the registration conditions have been removed.
The Council wrote to all registered teachers in 2009 providing them with the opportunity to correct the name under which they are registered. All requested amendments have been made. Where an error remains in the name of a teacher he or she must contact the Council to provide the correct spelling.
If there is an error with regard to the educational sector to which their qualifications apply, they may also contact the Council. We may require details of their qualifications (e.g. original qualifications transcripts).
Change of Details forms are available
here.
The Council does not present details of subjects on the certificate of
registration for which a teacher’s qualifications have been recognised.
This information is provided on a Confirmation of Registration document
which is available from the Council on request.
This is the date when both the Teaching Council and the register of teachers were established. Therefore, a teacher could not be present on the register prior to this date.
Sections 31(2) and (3) of the Teaching Council Act, 2001 are as follows:
31.—(1) Subject to subsections (2) and (3), a person may apply to the Council for registration.
(2) A person who before the establishment day—
(a) is employed as a teacher in a recognised school and whose remuneration in respect of that employment is paid out of monies provided by the Oireachtas, or
(b) where he or she is not so employed, he or she is eligible to be so employed,
shall be deemed to be registered for a period of 12 months from the establishment day.
(3) (a) A person referred to in subsection (2) shall apply to the Council for registration within the period specified in that subsection and shall, on the making of an application, be registered.
Therefore, persons registered under these two sections of the act were employed as teachers prior to 28 March 2006 and applied for registration prior to 28 March 2007.
Section 31(5) of the Teaching Council Act, 2001 is as follows: (5) The Council may make regulations for the purposes of registration under this section of persons, other than those referred to in subsection (2), which shall provide for, but not necessarily be limited to, all or any of the following:
(a) the form and manner in which an application for registration shall be made;
(b) the documentary and other evidence which shall accompany an application for registration;
(c) the conditions for admission to the register which may include, but not necessarily be limited to the following:
(i) qualifications;
(ii) teaching experience;
(iii) medical fitness;
(iv) evidence of character, …
Therefore, persons registered under section 31(5) must have applied for registration in compliance with the requirements of the Council, providing the required documentary evidence and must also satisfy the conditions set by the Council for admission to the register.
This statement applies to those who were employed as teachers prior to the establishment of the Teaching Council and that were registered under sections 31(2) and (3). It means that the qualifications were deemed to have met the criteria set by the Department of Education and Science for employment as a teacher. This also means that the Teaching Council did not assess the qualifications for the purposes of registration.
This education sector applies to those teachers who, prior to the establishment of the Teaching Council, met the qualifications requirements of the Department of Education and Science Circular, Memo V7. Persons registered with qualifications that met the requirements of this education sector possess degrees that are deemed suitable for teaching a Post-Primary curricular subject but do not possess a recognised teaching qualification applicable to the Post-Primary sector.
Teachers whose qualifications are deemed to meet the qualifications
requirements for this education sector would previously have been
recognised according to one of the following circulars of the Department
of Education and Science:
• Circular 32/92
• Circular 44/00
•
Circular 04/04.
Contact the Council. You will be required to provide details of your qualifications and possibly to submit qualifications transcripts.
No. Certificates of Registration are issued on a once-off basis. Each year after a teacher has renewed registration with the Teaching Council, he or she will receive a receipt for the fee along with an annual membership card as proof of registration.
Teachers are issued with a Certificate of Registration when all of the registration requirements have been met in full. The certificate confirms that the teacher was admitted to the Register of Teachers. The certificate states that employers should refer to the website of the Teaching Council to ascertain the current registration status of the teacher.
An employer can enter the teacher's registration number online here
Search the Register to see the teacher's current registration status.
If a certificate does not arrive in perfect condition, please return it to the Council in the original envelope for a replacement.
