Section 30 and the Requirement for Registration

The Minister for Education and Skills, Ruairi Quinn T.D., has confirmed that Section 30 of the Teaching Council Act, 2001 will commence on 1 November 2013.

After 1 November, when Section 30 is commenced, teachers employed in State-funded teaching positions in recognised schools will have to be registered with the Teaching Council in order to be paid from State funds.

This development paves the way for the commencement of the remaining sections of the Teaching Council Act, including those relating to the Council's investigative and disciplinary functions. The Council will therefore be empowered to conduct inquiries into the professional conduct of teachers.

Over the coming months we will continue to engage with relevant bodies to ensure that any remaining unregistered teachers are given the opportunity to register in advance of the commencement date.

The registration application process involves submitting:

  • an application form
  • certified copies of transcripts
  • proof of identity
  • evidence of character (including Garda Vetting - see below)
  • other documentary evidence if required
  • the application fee.
