A Chara,

I am honoured and privileged to introduce myself to you as the new Director of the Teaching Council. I look forward to working with members of the Council and staff to continue the important work of promoting and regulating the high standards of the teaching profession.

As you are aware, the Teaching Council has a strategic role, in collaboration with the Department of Education, to ensure a sufficient supply of registered and vetted teachers to meet the identified needs of the school system.

To be eligible for employment in a State-funded teaching post or to supervise the State Examinations, a teacher must maintain their Teaching Council registration. Teachers can maintain their registration using the online My Registration portal.

As a registered teacher you may be interested in information on the current rules regarding working as a substitute teacher after retirement.

Under the current rules in 2023, retired teachers can work as a teacher for up to 50 days in any calendar year, without pension ‘abatement’ rules applying. Further details including worked examples of how substitution work interacts with your pension can be found on www.gov.ie/retiredteachers.

Substitute posts are advertised on Sub Seeker, a service provided by www.educationposts.ie – retired teachers can register their details and availability to work on Sub Seeker.

I thank you for your continued support.

Dr Lynn Ramsey
Director/Stiúrthóir
