On 16 & 17 June 2016, the Teaching Council hosted IFTRA, the International Forum of Teaching Regulatory Authorities, conference in Dublin Castle. The theme of the conference was "Leadership in partnership - the professional role of teachers".
The event was attended by members of Teaching Councils from Wales, Scotland, New Zealand, Australia, Canada, Ghana and the Netherlands. Also in attendance at the conference was the Head of UNESCO, the International Task Force on Teachers, the Executive Director of NASDTEC, USA and the Executive Director of the Africa Forum of Teaching Regulatory Authorities.
The Minister for Education and Skills, Mr Richard Bruton, T.D., addressed the gathering of teaching councils and key note addresses were given by Prof John Coolahan, Professor Emeritus, NUI Maynooth and Mr Harry Cayton from the Professional Standards Authority in the UK. Presentations were also given from each of IFTRA's constituent regions (Australasia; Africa; UK and Ireland; North America) on their views on what teaching councils can do to support quality teaching and learning.
