Building on the popularity of the previous Research Bursary Schemes, and reflecting evolving thinking on research, teaching and learning, the Teaching Council announced a Research Support Framework on 11 March 2017. The framework has been designed to support teachers’ ongoing professional learning through their engagement in and with research, and the sum of €100,000 was made available for the framework in 2017-18.
In 2018, this framework was renamed the John Coolahan Research Support Framework, to mark the immense contribution of Professor John Coolahan to the field of education at home and abroad. We were deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Professor Coolahan, the Father of Irish Education. His work, life and energy up to the end will be an inspiration for all who care about teaching, learning and research.
The Framework seeks to offer support to those conducting research, or utilising and implementing research in their practice, either independently or in collaboration with others. This involves advisory support, and/or funding support.
The Council’s intention is that the Framework will encourage applicants to adopt an innovative and creative approach in considering how research and evidence can support their own and others’ teaching practice.
