Re-vetting

Having successfully completed the retrospective vetting of registered teachers who had not been previously vetting through the Council, the Council is now commencing the process of re-vetting. You can apply for re-vetting here.

Teachers who were vetted between January 2006 and 29 April 2016 and who hold the old paper Garda Central Vetting Unit (GCVU) disclosure will be required to apply for a NVB Disclosure.

Re-vetting will be linked to registration renewal (Section 33 of the Teaching Council Act 2001-2015 and Regulation 4 of the Teaching Council Registration Regulations (S1557).

All teachers going forward will be required to be re-vetted on a scheduled basis.

Teachers who comply with the re-vetting request may pay their renewal fee when it falls due in order to remain on the Register of Teachers, however, where there is a conviction or a prosecution pending, registration will not be confirmed as renewed until the Council has considered the disclosure.

If the vetting request is not complied with, registration may not be renewed. Teachers who are not registered with the Council cannot receive a state funded salary and would be required to complete the full application process in order to return to the Register. The process may take some time to complete and includes submission of a detailed application form, providing evidence of qualifications, and undergoing the vetting process of the NVB. Backdating of registration to cover a period of  non-registration is not permitted under the law.

Registered teachers can check their vetting status by logging on to the My Registration section of the Teaching Council website www.teachingcouncil.ie.

Please see the FAQ section of the website for further information regarding the re-vetting process.

The requirements for vetting under Circular 0031/2016 will continue to apply for all teachers who are changing employment.
