Professional Support Team

Droichead is fundamentally about the NQT’s professional journey and the process of their induction. A key part of this process is an NQT’s engagement with more experienced colleagues, and reflection on the professional conversations that take place on their own professional learning and practice.

The PST is a team of fully registered teachers in a school, ideally with five years’ experience, including the principal, who work collaboratively to support and mentor the NQT during school-based induction, in the first stages of their professional journey. There are a number of ways in which a PST can be established. Further guidance is available from the NIPT.

School PST: This PST is a team of teachers from within the school

Inter-school PST: This PST is formed between two or more schools. Some small schools suggest this would be useful for them because of the school size. Other schools suggest that they would use this model to further collaboration between schools.

External PST  member: A principal may wish to establish a PST, involving internal school staff and one external PST member. A panel of external PST members can be accessed by contacting NIPT (see further details on Schools may also nominate an external member and they can access training at the same time as the school. In this scenario, the external PST member can sign the form to make the recommendation at the conclusion of the process in place of the principal of the school.
