The Teaching Council supports the teachers and people of Ukraine

The Teaching Council is the professional standards body for the teaching profession, which promotes and regulates professional standards in teaching in Ireland, serving a current register of 113,000 professionally qualified teachers.

The Teaching Council expresses sincere solidarity and sympathy to the people of Ukraine - to teachers, children, parents/guardians, families, schools, educational institutions, communities and the entire nation affected by the Russian invasion.

Under Irish law, it a requirement for teachers to register with the Teaching Council in order to be paid from State funds.  It is important to note that the Department of Education Circulars permit teachers who are not registered to provide substitution cover in schools for a maximum of five consecutive days in exceptional circumstances.

Where Ukrainian teachers provide evidence of being a qualified teacher in their home country, they can apply to be admitted to the register of teachers in Ireland. The Teaching Council is currently developing processes to make reasonable accommodations in order to support the registration and vetting of Ukrainian teachers who have been granted Temporary Protection under the EU Temporary Protection Directive. This information will be published on the Teaching Council’s website in the coming days.
