Researchers in Residence Scheme

Researcher Panels

Through the RiRS, the Council will actively support schools or clusters of schools, wishing to partner with researchers in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) over the course of a school year to explore, synthesise, apply, and share existing research in one or more of the six Cosán Learning areas, namely:

Inclusion
Wellbeing
Literacy and Numeracy
ICT
Supporting Teachers’ Learning
Leading Learning

The researchers will work in partnership with the schools throughout the year, and particularly with the teacher who is leading the project at school level - the Cinnire Taighde (Research Lead). Potentially, a Researcher in Residence and a number of schools with shared research interests might choose to partner together, in order to maximize shared learning and impact.

The focus is on classroom practice, with the objective of enhancing the teaching and learning experience for teachers and learners.

Subject to that broad requirement, schools will be afforded considerable autonomy in using the supports available.

Note: Applicants may browse the lists of HEI-based researchers listed in the on each of our panels. Schools/applicants are welcome to note the name of a HEI-based researcher they may wish to align with if successful in their application, but please note the Teaching Council cannot guarantee the facilitation of this requested match. This is facilitated in Section 4 of the application form. However, please note that completion of Section 4 of the application form is not essential when submitting an application. Schools/applicants are advised that HEI-based researchers will not have any involvement or input in the application and adjudication process. The Teaching Council will match schools who are successful in their application with a HEI-based researcher, subject to that researcher’s availability and the relevance of their experience and expertise to the proposal.

Dr Jeffrey Buckley

Lecturer | Technological University of the Shannon, Athlone Campus

Jeff is a Lecturer in Research Pedagogy in the Athlone Campus of the Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest. He has a B.Tech. (Ed.) in Materials and Architectural Technology with Concurrent Teacher Education and a PhD in the Educational Sciences. His main research interests lie broadly in areas of teaching, learning, and assessment in STEM education, but he has a particular interest in technology and engineering education. Jeff has a strong interest in educational psychology, particularly in understanding how young people learn and in using this knowledge to inform pedagogical practices. He would like to collaborate with schools to gain a better understanding young people’s individual learning needs from a psychological perspective and how teachers can and do cater for these.

Dr Damien Burke

Damien has successfully led the implementation of School Development Planning, School Self-Evaluation and DEIS planning in his own school(s). He is a strong advocate of distributed leadership models and has researched various forms of successful teacher/middle leadership across a variety of primary schools in Ireland. His familiarity with the literature of school effectiveness and school leadership will provide a useful stimulus for schools interested in accessing the Leading Learning area of the RIRS.

To improve teaching and learning, a structure for reflecting on, changing and assessment of practice is required. Lesson study is one approach that teachers can adopt when leading learning in their own school context. My leadership of learning projects to date involved the use of lesson study to enhance pedagogical practice and consequently student learning. I am interested in a) leading lesson study work to improve pedagogy and learning, and b) developing assessment of and for learning methods and expertise, c) key skills development, values education, global citizenship education, and universal design for teaching and learning in the home economics classroom.

Dr Dorothy Morrissey

As a teacher/researcher on ‘Exploring teacher-artist as a model of CPD for exploring and enhancing arts education in Ireland’ (Kenny & Morrissey, 2016), Dorothy played a key role in the development of teacher-artist partnership as a model of CPD. As part of the National Pilot Project on Teacher Induction, she designed and delivered mentor training for teachers. She has taught on MIC’s Graduate Diploma in Mentoring and Teacher Development and has supervised research theses on leading learning.

Dr Majella Dempsey

Wellbeing promotion is of utmost importance in schools worldwide. However, most approaches are associated with providing students with knowledge about wellbeing and introducing additional interventions to enhance their wellbeing. I am interested in an alternative to these add-on approaches, which are related to designing pedagogies for wellbeing. I am working with a colleague to develop a theoretical background and rationale for doing this. We have developed a "Pedagogical Wellbeing Framework" which focused teachers' attention on the important aspects of tweaking their pedagogies to achieve results. I would like to work with teachers on developing practical examples of how pedagogies for wellbeing could enrich teachers' and students' daily practice.

Dr Niamh O'Brien

Niamh O’ Brien (B.Ed. (Hons), M.Ed., PhD) is a lecturer in Education at Hibernia College. Niamh lectures in the areas of wellbeing in education, philosophy of education, research methods, inclusion in education, social, political, and health education, physical education, and health promotion across both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. As a panel member on the RiRS, Niamh will collaborate on research that reflects all aspects of the Wellbeing Policy Statement and Framework for Practice. Niamh is currently actively engaged with national and international research that investigates the outcomes of wellbeing interventions across all levels of the education system in Ireland, from primary to higher-level education.

Dr Brendan O'Keeffe

Brendan O’Keeffe is a lecturer and researcher in Health and Physical Education in the Department of Physical Education and Sport Sciences at the University of Limerick. His contribution as an RiRS panel member will be to facilitate PE Departments and teachers in the development and delivery of high-quality evidence-based content through the ‘Leading learning’ theme of the Cosán initiative. Brendan also has a keen interest in whole-school approaches to activity promotion and wellbeing, informed by Comprehensive School Physical Activity framework. Brendan is actively engaged in a broad range of activity and health promotion initiatives in school settings, including: the pedagogy of health-related fitness (Youth-fit); scalable school-based health promotion intervention (BEFORE programme); resistance exercise in school settings (Project REACH); and barriers and supports to physical activity participation (CSPPA).

Flavia H. Santos (BSc Psychology, PhD in Neuroscience) is an Assistant Professor in the University College Dublin at the School of Psychology and awardee of the UCD Ad Astra Fellowship. Her research interests are students’ well-being, resilience, and mathematics anxiety. While Dorothy sees inclusion as extending beyond gender, her published work on inclusion to date has centred on gender. In 2016, she performed her work of research-based theatre, Goldilocks’s Testimony, at the INTO Equality Conference, where she also facilitated a workshop on gender and career progression. She has led a school-based project exploring gender with young children and has supervised research theses on gender.

Patrick Burke is a primary school teacher who now works as an Assistant Professor in Literacy Education in the Institute of Education, Dublin City University. He is interested in supporting teachers to apply research-informed practices in implementing the Primary Language Curriculum. He is also particularly interested in collaborating with teachers on research-practice connections in other related areas, including: the teaching of spelling, children’s comprehension/reading difficulties, children’s metacognition/thinking when reading digital and traditional texts, children’s evaluation of sources (including fake news!) and the teaching of literacy across the curriculum.

Dr Maria Ryan

I am a Lecturer in Business at MIC, School of Post Primary Education, and my research interests concern the nature and sources of mathematics anxiety among students at different stages of the education system. Through a combination of mathematics anxiety testing and mathematics life stories, my research investigates the learner’s engagement with mathematics throughout their life and how that impacts their level of anxiety towards mathematics. Flavia H. Santos (BSc Psychology, PhD in Neuroscience) is an Assistant Professor in the University College Dublin at the School of Psychology and Director of the MSc Disability. Her research interests are numeracy development, home learning environment and mathematics anxiety. Instead, teachers and schools require tailored support in their professional learning due to their individual needs, goals and stage of professional development. From my experience as Director of Postgraduate Studies in Education, a lecturer in Education and Psychology, research supervisor, and researcher, I am well positioned to support Teachers’ learning, be it in the implementation of short or long-term approaches. Some of my research encompasses teacher collaboration as a mode for CPD, group assessment/learning and student teacher support and learning for example. More recently, my work has incorporated the use of online social platform into the collaborative process to facilitate professional learning and wider professional reach.
