The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect on 25 May 2018. The GDPR is legislation which the European Union has enacted and it increases the obligations on all organisations as to the standards they must meet when handling and storing personal data.
As a statutory State body, operating within the remit of the Teaching Council Acts 2001-2015 and the Education Act 1998 the Teaching Council is obliged to comply with this legislation. As the professional standards body for the teaching profession, we welcome the new standards, which the GDPR is putting in place and continue to take our responsibilities very seriously.
The Teaching Council remains committed to being professional, open and transparent in how we process personal data through the delivery of all of our work. One of the requirements under this new legislation is for organisations to publish how we meet the standards required in how we collect, use and protect data.
This Policy has been developed in keeping with this approach and sets out the basis on which any personal data provided by to the Council will be processed. This applies to all personal data, irrespective of the medium or method by which it has been collected.
This Policy may be updated from time to time as new Data Protection legislation is introduced.
