John Coolahan Research Support Framework

Final Reports

Building on the popularity of the previous Research Bursary Schemes, the Teaching Council announced a Research Support Framework (RSF) on 11 March 2017. The framework has been designed to support teachers' ongoing professional learning through their engagement in and with research.

The John Coolahan Research Support Framework marks the immense contribution of Professor John Coolahan to the field of education at home and abroad. His work, life and energy are an inspiration for all who care about teaching, learning and research.

The framework offers support to teachers and others in using existing research to inform their practice, or in carrying out new research, either in collaboration with others or independently.

In 2021, the framework was redesigned as two separate but complementary schemes:

  • The Research Bursary Scheme supports teachers carrying out new research.
  • The Researchers in Residence Scheme supports schools or clusters of schools wishing to partner with researchers in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) over the course of a school year to explore, synthesise, apply, and share existing research.

2007-2011 Research Bursary Scheme

Between 2007 and 2011 the Teaching Council ran 4 research bursary schemes to support teachers' ongoing professional learning through their engagement in and with research. During this time, 108 projects were awarded funding and links to the research received to date are provided below. For your convenience we have grouped them according to the area being researched. We trust this will be a valuable research resource for teachers and others interested in teaching, learning and for practising teachers.

If you have an interest in making contact with the researcher to find out more, email research@teachingcouncil.ie and we will be happy to forward your contact details to the researcher.
