The Teaching Council is pleased to announce the addition of two new subjects to the Curricular Subject Requirements (Post-primary), and clarifications to certain existing subjects, which will come into effect for persons applying for registration on or after 5 January 2026.
The two new subjects are:
- Climate Action and Sustainable Development, and
- Drama, Film and Theatre Studies
In addition to the new subjects, clarifications have also been made to the requirements for the subjects of Physical Education, Politics & Society, Music, and Art. These clarifications reflect the Council’s commitment to establishing and upholding high standards for teachers in Ireland whilst also demonstrating its ability to respond to the evolving needs of the system.
The updated requirements follow a review undertaken by the Teaching Council in 2025 following consultation with stakeholders. The Council initiated a full review of its Curricular Subject Requirements in 2018. These updated requirements were published in 2020 and are in effect since January 2023 for applicants applying for registration with the Council.
As the regulator of the teaching profession in Ireland, the Council ensures that teachers meet the necessary qualification, standards, competencies, and character requirements for registration.
Read the updated Curricular Subject Requirements (Post-primary) effective from 5 January 2026.
